I loosely followed this tutorial: https://ieqgis.wordpress.com/2018/10/14/add-realistic-mist-and-fog-to-topography-in-qgis-3-2/ in QGIS to create this visualization of Switzerland. It involved creating a hillshade and a multidirectional hillshade out of DEM data. I then colorized and layered the two. To create the misty effect of the lower regions, I colorized the original DEM data and layered it over the hillshades. To make the country pop, I created a shapefile from the boundaries of the original DEM data and utilized the “difference” tool to create a cut out in it for the shapefile of Switzerland. Through this process I was able to blur out the rest of the region.
